Word Stress — Where the Punch Lands

Intermediate–Advanced55 min25 questions7 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

Chapter 3 taught you that every word has one hero syllable. This chapter teaches you to FIND it — because in English, stress position is part of the word’s identity. REcord (noun) and reCORD (verb) are two different words. Put the punch on the wrong syllable and natives genuinely fail to recognise the word — a mis-stressed word confuses more than a mispronounced sound. The good news: stress follows learnable rules, especially from suffixes.
The two-syllable law

Nouns punch FRONT: OFfice, TAble, MARket, PROject. Verbs punch BACK: deCIDE, reLAX, inVEST, mainTAIN.

The switch pairs
  • REcord (n) / reCORD (v)
  • PREsent (n) / preSENT (v)
  • OBject (n) / obJECT (v)
  • INcrease (n) / inCREASE (v)
The suffix magnets

-tion, -sion, -ic pull stress to JUST BEFORE them: regisTRAtion, deCIsion, ecoNOmic. -ity too: opporTUnity, aBIlity.

The golden rule: stress is part of spelling — learn every new word WITH its punch position, the way you learn gender in Hindi (किताब स्त्रीलिंग है, the way deVELopment punches on VEL). A dictionary marks it with a mark before the hero: de’velopment. From today, no new word enters your vocabulary without its stress mark.

When to Use It

Use 1

Rule 1 — Two-syllable nouns front, verbs back

About 90% reliable — the best free rule in English.
  • Nouns (front punch): OFfice, MARket, PROduct, PROfit, CONtract, PROject, PERmit, DIScount
  • Verbs (back punch): deCIDE, aGREE, inVEST, obTAIN, perMIT, disCUSS, reCEIVE, comPLETE
  • Same spelling, two words: ‘Here is the CONtract’ (noun) / ‘Prices conTRACT in winter’ (verb)
  • India’s habit: प्रोजेक्ट with even stress — English: PROject (noun, the building you sell) vs. proJECT (verb, to forecast).

Rule 2 — The suffix magnets

Certain endings FIX the stress position mechanically. Learn the magnet, solve a thousand words.
  • -tion/-sion stress right before: regisTRAtion, construcTION... say construcTION as conSTRUCtion, posiTION poSItion, deCIsion, teleVIsion
  • -ic right before: ecoNOmic, speCIfic, straTEgic, hisTOric (but POlitics — the -ics twist)
  • -ity right before: aBIlity, opporTUnity, seCUrity, faCIlity, elecTRIcity
  • -ee / -eer / -ese stress ON the suffix itself: employEE, engiNEER, JapaNESE, refeREE
  • -ate (verbs) punch two back: CALculate, NEgotiate neGOtiate, COMmunicate comMUnicate

Rule 3 — The shifting families

The same root moves its punch as suffixes grow — the schwa (Ch 3) swallows whatever loses the stress.
  • PHOtograph phoTOgraphy photoGRAphic — three words, three punches
  • eCOnomy ecoNOmic eCOnomist
  • DEmocrat deMOcracy demoCRAtic
  • The lesson: never assume the family keeps the parent’s stress. Each form is learned with its own punch.

Rule 4 — The Indian misplacement list

High-frequency words where Indian English habitually punches the wrong syllable. Fixing these twenty upgrades every meeting.
  • deVELopment (not DEvelopment), hoTEL (not HOtel), eVENT (not EEvent)
  • sucCESS, perCENT, caREER (क्अ-रिअर), deGREE, maCHINE, poLICE (Ch 3’s schwa openers — punch lands late)
  • comMITtee, adVERtisement = adVERtisment (British) — India says एडवर-टाइज़-मेंट; safer: adVERtisement
  • MAINtenance (front! — not mainTAINance), NEcessary, INteresting (IN-tres-ting), COMfortable
  • Numbers: thirTEEN vs. THIRty — the -teen/-ty pairs live or die on stress: 13/30, 14/40, 15/50 confusions on calls are stress errors, not hearing errors.

Hindi Concept Note

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong
Right
Why
‘I will REcord the meeting’ (noun stress on the verb)
reCORD (verb — punch back)
The switch pairs: REcord/reCORD, PREsent/preSENT, OBject/obJECT. Grammar decides the punch.
development = DEvelopment (front punch)
deVELopment
One of India’s most universal stress errors — the punch is on VEL.
hotel = HOtel
hoTEL
Same family: eVENT, sucCESS, perCENT, deGREE, caREER — late punches.
maintenance = main-TAIN-ance (following the verb maintain)
MAINtenance — the noun jumped its punch forward
Families shift: mainTAIN (v) but MAINtenance (n). Learn each form separately.
‘The total is thirteen thousand’ heard as thirty
thirTEEN — punch the TEEN, and stretch it
On numbers, over-punch: thirTEEN vs. THIRty. Confirm big numbers by punching the difference.
economic = eCOnomic (copying ‘economy’)
ecoNOmic — the -ic magnet pulls the punch
eCOnomy ecoNOmic eCOnomist: three punches, one family.

Fix the punch, not the sounds. Late punches: sucCESS, perCENT, caREER, deGREE. On the phone, thirTEEN is stretched and THIRty is clipped.
Step 5

Signal Words

Punch-finding rules:
2-syllable noun front; 2-syllable verb back
-tion/-sion/-ic/-ity punch just before the suffix
-ee/-eer/-ese punch on the suffix
Families shift their punch — learn each form with its mark
-teen = late punch and stretched; -ty = front punch and clipped
