How to Use This Chapter

This is the book’s reference engine: two hundred high-frequency words, each with the common Indian pronunciation and the correct one in Devanagari. Every entry applies a rule you have already learned — silent letters (Ch 6), the schwa (Ch 3), hidden z (Ch 4, 7), stress position (Ch 8). The wrong forms are printed deliberately: recognising your own habit is half the correction.

Notation: * after a Devanagari letter = tongue-out TH (Chapter 4). क्अ = the lazy schwa (Chapter 3). Where two forms are given with ‘दोनों’, both are accepted internationally.

The drill: one table per week, five words a day. Say the wrong form once (hear your habit), the correct form three times, then verify one word daily on Google/YouGlish. Eight weeks, permanent upgrade.

The Patterns Behind the 200

Look back and you’ll see the same seven machines doing all the work: (1) silent letters — debt, salmon, receipt (Ch 6); (2) the schwa collapsing unstressed vowels — camera, corporate, banana (Ch 3); (3) hidden z — busy, season, series, bruise (Ch 4); (4) the buzzing झ़ — genre, anaesthesia (Ch 6); (5) stress position — dessert, development, hotel (Ch 8); (6) OO/O traps — monk, oven, onion, wound (Ch 2); (7) borrowed-word spellings — buffet, cliché, quinoa, jacuzzi. Master the machines and the next thousand words correct themselves.
