English has two main futures — will and going to — and they are NOT interchangeable. Will = decisions made at the moment of speaking, promises, and predictions from opinion. Going to = plans already made and predictions from visible evidence. School taught you ‘will = future’; real English is smarter than that.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Will
Subject+will+base verb
I will call you tonight. (deciding now)
Going to
Subject+am/is/are+going to+base verb
I am going to sell this plot. (already planned)
Negative / Question
will not (won’t) / Will you...? | am not going to / Are you going to...?
The golden rule: decided BEFORE speaking going to. Deciding WHILE speaking will. ‘What are your plans?’ answers use going to; instant offers, promises, and reactions use will.
When did you decide?
Decided before you speak: going to. Deciding as you speak: will.

Form
Flavour
Example
will
Instant decision / promise / opinion
I’ll call him right now.
going to
Prior intention / visible evidence
I’m going to call him about the dues. (I decided yesterday)
In everyday speech, ‘going to’ often sounds like ‘gonna’ — understand it when you hear it, but write ‘going to’ in formal messages.
Reaction, plan, arrangement
WILLinstant decisionpromise · opinionI’ll call him right now.(decided while speaking)GOING TOprior intentionvisible evidenceI’m going to call himabout the dues.(decided yesterday)PRESENT CONTINUOUSfixed arrangementtime and place setI am calling him at 5;he is expecting it.(another person is involved)
Will reacts, going to carries out a plan, and the Present Continuous fixes an arrangement.
Step 4
Hindi Concept Note
अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए

मैं तुम्हें फ़ोन करूँगा। (अभी सोचा)
I will call you.
मैं यह दुकान बेचने वाला हूँ। (पहले से तय)
I am going to sell this shop.
Hint: हिंदी का ‘वाला हूँ / वाली है’ लगभग हमेशा going to होता है — बारिश होने वाली है
It is going to rain.
और तुरंत लिया गया फ़ैसला — ‘अच्छा, मैं कर दूँगा’ — हमेशा will: Okay, I will do it.
Step 5
Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make
Wrong
Right
Why

I am meeting the CA tomorrow at 11. / I am going to meet...

Look at the sky! It is going to rain.
Visible evidence going to.
I am going to help you with that bag! (instant offer)
I will help you with that bag!
Offers decided on the spot take will.

going to already decided, planning to, Look!/evidence in front of you, ‘wala hoon’ feeling
