Module 6 · Mini Grammar Essentials
Even / Even Though / Even If
Step 1
Quick Look
Three tools from one root. EVEN is the surprise particle — it highlights the unexpected item (‘Even the guard knew the price’). EVEN THOUGH connects to a FACT (‘even though it rained’ — it really rained). EVEN IF connects to a HYPOTHESIS (‘even if it rains’ — maybe it will, maybe not). Fact vs. maybe — that’s the whole chapter.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
EVEN — surprise spotlight
Even Sharma ji was impressed. / He didn’t even open the file.
EVEN THOUGH + fact
We closed the deal even though the market was down. (it WAS down — real)
EVEN IF + hypothesis
We won’t sell below 90, even if the buyer walks away. (he may or may not)
The golden rule: EVEN never works alone as a connector. ‘Even he is rich, he is unhappy’ is broken English — a naked even cannot join two clauses. Choose its full form: even though (for real facts) or even if (for possibilities). Standalone even only spotlights a single word or phrase.
Fact or maybe?
Step 2
When to Use It
Use 1
EVEN — spotlighting the surprise
Place it directly before the surprising element; with verbs, before the main verb.
- Even the watchman has invested in that scheme. (surprising person)
- He works even on Diwali. (surprising time)
- She didn’t even ask the price. (surprising missing action)
- The rate is high — even for this sector.
Use 2
EVEN THOUGH — despite a real fact
A stronger ‘although’. The clause after it actually happened / is true.
- Even though the loan was approved, he backed out.
- They bought the flat even though the possession was two years away.
- Even though I warned him twice, he paid the advance in cash.
Use 3
EVEN IF — despite a possibility
The condition is imaginary or uncertain — the result stands regardless.
- Even if they double the offer, this plot is not for sale.
- We’ll start on Monday even if the architect isn’t back.
- Even if it rains, the bhoomi pujan will happen — we’ve booked a canopy.
Use 4
EVEN SO — the sentence-starter cousin
= ‘despite that’, linking back to the previous sentence.
- The location is average. Even so, the price justifies it.
- He has defaulted before. Even so, the committee gave him one more chance.
Step 3
Hindi Concept Note
अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
EVEN = ‘भी/तक’ वाला ताज्जुब — हैरानी वाली चीज़ के ठीक पहले बैठता है: चौकीदार तक जानता था EVEN the guard knew। उसने पूछा तक नहीं He didn’t EVEN ask।
EVEN THOUGH = ‘हालाँकि’ (जो सच में हुआ): हालाँकि बारिश हुई, हम गए
EVEN THOUGH it rained, we went. (बारिश सच में हुई!)
EVEN IF = ‘चाहे... भी’ (जो शायद हो): चाहे बारिश हो भी जाए, हम जाएँगे
EVEN IF it rains, we will go. (अभी हुई नहीं — imagination)
हिंदी की trap: ‘चाहे वह अमीर भी है...’ सोचकर लोग अकेला even जोड़ देते हैं — ‘Even he is rich, he is unhappy’ ग़लत! दो वाक्य जोड़ने के लिए पूरा शब्द चाहिए: EVEN THOUGH he is rich, he is unhappy.
सच बनाम शायद — बस यही पूछो: बात हो चुकी/सच है even though; अभी सिर्फ़ possibility है even if।
Step 4
Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make
Wrong
Right
Why
Even he is the owner, he never visits the site.
Even though he is the owner, he never visits the site.
Naked even can’t join clauses — the fact needs even though.
Even though it rains tomorrow, the event will happen. (tomorrow = not yet real)
Even if it rains tomorrow, the event will happen.
A future possibility even if. Even though claims it already rained.
He didn’t respond even. (spotlight on the verb)
He didn’t even respond.
Even sits before the main verb, not at the end.
Even if he apologised yesterday, she is still upset. (he really did apologise)
Even though he apologised yesterday, she is still upset.
A completed fact even though.
Even I offered him double salary, he refused. (you really offered)
Even though I offered him double salary, he refused.
Same disease: the naked even. Real past offer even though.
We will not reduce the price, even the buyer threatens to walk out.
We will not reduce the price, even if the buyer threatens to walk out.
Hypothetical threat even if.
Step 5
Signal Words
The fact-vs-maybe test:
Spotlighting one surprising word bare even (before that word / before the main verb)
The clause already happened or is true even though
The clause is a possibility (often future) even if
Starting a new sentence with ‘despite that’ Even so
Rule of thumb: even alone NEVER joins two clauses
