Module 6 · Mini Grammar Essentials
Countable vs. Uncountable Nouns
Step 1
Quick Look
English divides all nouns into two tribes: countable (one plot, two plots) and uncountable — nouns that refuse plurals and refuse ‘a/an’. The trap: English’s uncountable list ignores Hindi logic. ADVICE, INFORMATION, FURNITURE, LUGGAGE, NEWS, WORK are all uncountable — which is why ‘advices’ and ‘informations’ are the two most famous Indian-English words that don’t exist.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Countable
a file, three files, many files, few files
Uncountable
advice, information, furniture, luggage, news, work, money, water — no plural, no a/an
The counters
countable many / few / a number of | uncountable much / little / a lot of
The golden rule: to count an uncountable, borrow a container — a piece of advice, two pieces of information, an item of furniture, a glass of water, a sum of money. The noun stays singular forever; the container does the counting. And uncountable subjects take singular verbs: The news IS good. This information WAS useful.
Two tribes of nouns
Step 2
When to Use It
Use 1
The uncountable hall of fame — memorise these
The ones that betray Hindi speakers daily.
- advice, information, news, work, homework, furniture, luggage, baggage, equipment
- money, cash, jewellery, traffic, weather, knowledge, evidence, progress, hair, bread, rice
- He gave me some useful advice. / The furniture has arrived. / My hair is turning grey.
Use 2
Choosing the counter words
many/few pair with countables; much/little with uncountables; some/any/a lot of work with both.
- How many units are left? / How much inventory is left?
- Few buyers came, and there was little interest in the top floor.
- We have some time and a lot of paperwork.
Use 3
FEWER vs. LESS
Fewer counts; less measures.
- Fewer visitors came this Sunday. (you can count visitors)
- There is less demand this quarter. (you can’t count demand)
- Less than 40 lakhs won’t work. (amounts of money/time/distance take less, even with numbers)
Use 4
Double-life nouns
Some nouns switch tribes with meaning.
- I need paper for the printer. (material) / I need a paper from the tehsil. (a document)
- Business is slow. (activity) / He started a business. (a company)
- Experience matters. (in general) / That deal was a bad experience. (one event)
To count an uncountable, borrow a container
Step 3
Hindi Concept Note
अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
English के हिसाब से कुछ चीज़ें गिनी नहीं जा सकतीं — चाहे हिंदी में गिनती हो। सलाह, जानकारी, सामान, ख़बर — सब uncountable।
इसीलिए ‘advices’ और ‘informations’ English में शब्द ही नहीं हैं: दो सलाहें two pieces of advice; कई जानकारियाँ a lot of information।
गिनना हो तो बर्तन उधार लो: a piece of advice, an item of furniture, a glass of water।
गिनती वालों के साथ many/few; बिना गिनती वालों के साथ much/little: कितने plot? How MANY plots? कितना पैसा? How MUCH money?
और verb हमेशा singular: ख़बर अच्छी है The news IS good (‘news are’ कभी नहीं!)।
Step 4
