Module 6 · Mini Grammar Essentials
The Subjunctive
Step 1
Quick Look
The subjunctive is English’s hidden formal gear — the grammar of demands, proposals, and official requirements. After SUGGEST, DEMAND, INSIST, RECOMMEND, REQUEST + THAT, the verb goes to its BARE form for every subject: ‘I suggest that he SUBMIT the file’ (not submits), ‘The board demanded that she BE present’ (not is). It looks like an error; it’s the highest register in the language.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
The pattern
verb of demand/suggestion+THAT+subject+BASE VERB
We recommend that he apply before March.
BE stays BE
The committee insisted that every member BE consulted. (not is/was)
Negative
that+subject+NOT+base verb
The lawyer advised that we not sign the annexure yet.
The golden rule: inside the that-clause, the verb is frozen at its bare form — no -s for he/she/it, no past shift, and ‘be’ never becomes is/am/are/was. ‘I suggested that he goes’ feels right to the ear and is wrong on paper: I suggested that he GO. The trigger verbs to memorise: suggest, recommend, demand, insist, request, require, propose, ask, urge.
The frozen verb
Step 2
When to Use It
Use 1
After the trigger verbs
suggest, recommend, demand, insist, request, require, propose, urge + that + base verb.
- The auditor recommended that the firm maintain separate escrow accounts.
- We insist that the token BE routed through RTGS only.
- The RWA demanded that the builder repair the approach road first.
- The lawyer proposed that both parties sign in the presence of a notary.
Use 2
After ‘It is important/essential/vital/necessary that...’
The adjective triggers pull the same bare verb.
- It is essential that every co-owner BE present at the registry.
- It is important that the buyer verify the chain himself.
- It is vital that the cheque clear before the handover.
Use 3
The negative and passive shapes
Not slots before the bare verb; passive = be + V3.
- The committee ruled that the guard not leave the gate unmanned.
- We requested that the meeting not be postponed again.
- The court ordered that the property BE SEALED till the verdict.
Use 4
The IF I WERE family — the other subjunctive
The unreal ‘were’ from Module 2 is the same beast: If I were you, as it were, I wish it were.
- If I were the seller, I would take this offer today.
- I wish the office were closer to the metro.
- Suppose he were to back out — clause 7 protects us. (Module 2’s were-to returns)

Step 3
Hindi Concept Note
अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
Subjunctive = माँग/सुझाव/आदेश की formal grammar। Trigger verbs के बाद that-clause में verb की पहली (bare) form — हर subject के लिए:
मैं सुझाव देता हूँ कि वह file जमा करे
I suggest that he SUBMIT the file. (‘submits’ नहीं — यही पूरा खेल है!)
Board ने माँग की कि वह मौजूद रहे
The board demanded that she BE present. (‘is’ नहीं, ‘be’!)
Trigger याद करो: suggest, recommend, demand, insist, request, require, propose, urge — और ‘It is important/essential that...’
Negative: not सीधे bare verb से पहले — वकील ने सलाह दी कि हम अभी sign न करें
The lawyer advised that we NOT SIGN yet.
और पुराना दोस्त: If I WERE you (Module 2) भी इसी subjunctive परिवार का है — was नहीं, were।
Step 4
Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make
Wrong
Right
Why
I suggest that he goes to the SDM directly.
I suggest that he go to the SDM directly.
Trigger verb + that bare verb. No -s survives.
The committee insisted that she is present at the AGM.
The committee insisted that she be present at the AGM.
Be stays be — never is/was inside the subjunctive clause.
It is essential that every partner signs the deed.
It is essential that every partner sign the deed.
‘It is essential that’ is a trigger too — bare verb.
We requested that the hearing is not postponed.
We requested that the hearing not be postponed.
Negative shape: not + be + V3.
The court ordered that the property is sealed.
The court ordered that the property be sealed.
Order + that passive subjunctive: be sealed.
If I was you, I would insist on an exit clause.
If I were you, I would insist on an exit clause.
The were-subjunctive — Module 2’s oldest rule, still the most broken.
Step 5
Signal Words
Trigger checklist:
suggest / recommend / demand / insist / request / require / propose / urge + that bare verb
It is important / essential / vital / necessary that bare verb
be never becomes is/was inside the clause; passive = be + V3
negative = that + subject + not + bare verb
unreal be = were (if I were, I wish it were, suppose he were to...)
