A vs. An

Beginner–Intermediate35 min25 questions7 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

Hindi has no articles — no word does the job of ‘a’ or ‘the’. So this module starts from zero, and starts small: A vs. AN. The rule everyone learns in school is wrong as taught. It is not about the first LETTER; it is about the first SOUND. That one correction fixes ‘an university’ and ‘a hour’ forever.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
The real rule
AN before a vowel SOUND, A before a consonant SOUND — spelling is irrelevant.
Proof pair 1
a university (sounds like ‘yoo-niversity’ consonant sound) / an umbrella (u-mbrella vowel sound)
Proof pair 2
an hour (the h is silent ‘our’) / a hotel (the h is spoken)

The golden rule: SAY the word, don’t spell it. If your mouth opens with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u sounds), use AN. If it starts with any consonant sound — including the ‘y’ sound hiding in university, European, one — use A. Abbreviations follow the same law: an MBA (‘em’), an FIR (‘ef’), a BA (‘bee’).

Spelling vs. sound: who decides?

Where letter and sound disagree (the two gold boxes), the SOUND always wins.

When to Use It

Use 1

Straightforward cases

Where letter and sound agree.
  • a plot, a buyer, a cheque, a site visit
  • an office, an agreement, an investor, an EMI
anhour silent h → “our”VOWEL SOUNDahotel spoken h → “hotel”CONSONANT SOUND
Use 2

Silent H — the sound wins

hour, honest, honour, heir start with vowel sounds.
  • The registry took an hour and a half.
  • He is an honest broker — rare and valuable.
  • But the spoken h takes a: a hotel, a house, a hospital, a highway.

Use 3

The hidden ‘y’ and ‘w’ sounds

university, European, one, unique begin with consonant sounds despite vowel spellings.
  • She teaches at a university in Meerut.
  • a European client, a one-time settlement, a unique location
  • a used car (yoozd), a uniform policy

Use 4

Abbreviations — say the first letter

The letter’s NAME decides: F = ‘ef’, M = ‘em’, S = ‘es’, H = ‘aych’ vowel sounds.
  • an FIR, an MBA, an MLA, an NRI buyer, an SMS, an HDFC branch
  • a BJP office, a DDA flat, a CA, a PAN card

Use 5

Professions and descriptions — a/an is compulsory

Hindi drops it (‘woh engineer hai’); English cannot.
  • He is an engineer. (NOT: He is engineer.)
  • She is a lawyer and a very good one.
  • It was an expensive mistake.

Step 3

Hindi Concept Note

अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
हिंदी में article होते ही नहीं — ‘वह इंजीनियर है’ में ‘एक’ ज़रूरी नहीं। English में है: He is AN engineer.
असली नियम अक्षर का नहीं, आवाज़ का है: पहली आवाज़ vowel जैसी an; consonant जैसी a।
University बोलो — ‘यू-निवर्सिटी’ — ‘य’ की आवाज़ = consonant a university। Hour बोलो — ‘आवर’ — h ग़ायब an hour।
Short forms में पहले अक्षर का नाम बोलो: M = ‘एम’ (vowel से शुरू) an MBA, an MLA। B = ‘बी’ a BA।
पेशा बताते समय a/an कभी मत छोड़ो: वह डॉक्टर है She is A doctor — बिना article के वाक्य अधूरा है।
