Module 3 · Modal Verbs
Have Got To & Had Better
Step 1
Quick Look
Two spoken-English power tools. HAVE GOT TO (‘gotta’) is have to with urgency — the obligation you feel right now. HAD BETTER is advice with a warning attached — do this, or something bad follows. Both look past-tense; neither is. And both are conversation modals: perfect in speech and messages, slightly informal for legal documents.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Have got to
Subject+have/has got to+V1
I’ve got to reach the registry office by 11.
Had better
Subject+had better (‘d better)+V1
You had better carry the originals.
Negatives
I haven’t got to... (rare; use don’t have to) / You had better NOT be late. (not after better)
The golden rule: HAD BETTER is present/future advice despite the ‘had’ — it warns about what happens NOW or NEXT, never about the past. And its negative is fixed word order: had better + not + verb. ‘You had not better go’ and ‘You had better to go’ are both impossible.
Had better points forward
Step 2
When to Use It
Use 1
HAVE GOT TO — urgent, felt obligation
Have to, with the pressure turned up. Contractions rule: I’ve got to / he’s got to / gotta (very casual).
- I’ve got to answer this — it’s the Bidhuri office calling.
- She’s got to submit the tender before 3 p.m. sharp.
- We’ve got to fix the seepage before the buyer’s second visit.
Use 2
HAVE GOT TO — strong deduction (casual must)
Same ‘surely’ meaning as must, in spoken register.
- You’ve got to be joking — 2 crores for that unit?
- This has got to be the wrong address; there’s no tower here.
Use 3
HAD BETTER — advice with consequences
Stronger than should: an or-else lives inside it, spoken or silent.
- You had better verify the chain of documents, or the loan will bounce.
- He’d better apologise to the client before this escalates.
- We had better start early — the fog on NH-9 is unpredictable.
Use 4
HAD BETTER NOT — the warning negative
Not slots after better, never before had.
- You’d better not promise possession dates we can’t meet.
- They had better not touch the boundary wall without a survey.
Use 5
Register check — where each belongs
Speech and WhatsApp: both shine. Contracts and formal letters: prefer must/have to/should.
- WhatsApp: “Bhai, you’d better reach by 10, warna token cancel.”
- Agreement clause: “The Second Party must clear all dues by the 10th.” (not ‘had better’)
Where each one belongs
Step 3
Hindi Concept Note
अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
HAVE GOT TO = ‘अभी करना ही है’ — have to का urgent अवतार। मुझे निकलना ही होगा
I’ve got to leave.
HAD BETTER = ‘बेहतर होगा कि... (वरना...)’ — should से सख़्त, धमकी जैसी हल्की चेतावनी साथ में।
तुम originals ले जाओ तो बेहतर है (वरना काम रुकेगा)
You had better carry the originals.
दो जाल से बचो: ‘had’ देखकर past मत समझो — had better हमेशा अभी/आगे की सलाह है। और negative का order fixed है: had better NOT go (not हमेशा better के बाद)।
Register का ध्यान रखो: बोलचाल और WhatsApp में दोनों बढ़िया; agreement या legal letter में must/should लिखो।
Step 4
