Continuous & Mixed Conditionals

Advanced50 min25 questions8 sections
Step 1

Quick Look

Two advanced upgrades in one chapter. CONTINUOUS conditionals put an ongoing action inside any conditional (if it were raining... / I would be sitting...). MIXED conditionals connect two different time zones — a past condition with a present result, or a present condition with a past result. This is where conditionals stop being formulas and start being real thinking.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Continuous (unreal now)
If it were raining, we would be sitting inside. (it isn’t; we aren’t)
Mixed: past → present
If I had taken that Dubai job, I would be rich now. (I didn’t take it; I’m not rich)
Mixed: present → past
If he were more careful, he would not have lost the file. (he is careless; he lost it)

The golden rule for mixed conditionals: EACH clause carries its own time. Ask two questions separately — WHEN is the condition? WHEN is the result? Then give each half the form its own time demands: past condition = had + V3; present result = would + V1; present condition = simple past/were; past result = would have + V3.

Ask two questions: when is the condition, and when is the result? Then give each half the form its own time needs.
Step 2

When to Use It

IFhe were sleepingRESULThe wouldn’t be replyingNOW
Use 1

Continuous forms — ongoing actions in unreal worlds

Any conditional can host an -ing form when the action is in progress.
  • If he were sleeping, he wouldn’t be replying to your messages. (unreal present)
  • If they had been paying attention, the crane accident would not have happened. (unreal past)
  • If the work were progressing on schedule, I would not be calling you daily.
NOWIFwe had registered thecompany in 2019RESULTwe would bedebt-free todayin 2019today
Use 2

Mixed Type A: past condition present result

A different past would have created a different NOW. The most common mixed pattern.
  • If we had registered the company in 2019, we would be debt-free today.
  • If she had learnt driving in college, she would not depend on cabs now.
  • If I hadn’t trusted that agent, I would still have my savings.
NOWIFhe were seriousabout businessRESULThe would have returnedyour calls last weeklast week
Use 3

Mixed Type B: present condition past result

A permanent trait or ongoing fact explains a past event.
  • If he were serious about business, he would have returned your calls last week.
  • If this locality weren’t so remote, the project would have sold out in the launch phase.
  • If I knew German, I would have applied for that Frankfurt posting.
PAST WORDSNOW WORDSthat daylast yearin 2019nowtodaystillwould have+V3would+V1
Use 4

Reading the clues

Time words expose the mix — now, today, still vs. last week, in 2019, that day.
  • If you had booked THEN, you would be paying half the EMI NOW.
  • If he weren’t so stubborn (a permanent trait), he would have accepted the offer THAT DAY.
-ing in an unreal world
UNREAL NOWNOWin progressIFwere+V-ingRESULTwould be+V-ingIf it were raining, we would be sitting inside.UNREAL PASTNOWin progressIFhad been+V-ingRESULTwould have+V3If they had been watching, they would have caught the error.
An action in progress takes -ing: were + -ing (now) or had been + -ing (past) in the if-clause; a present result becomes would be + -ing.

The Mixing Table

Condition (if-clause)Result clauseExample
Past: had + V3Present: would + V1If I had saved earlier, I would own a flat now.
Present: past / werePast: would have + V3If he were honest, he would have admitted the mistake.
Past: had been + -ingPast: would have + V3If they had been watching, they would have caught the error.
Present: were + -ingPresent: would + V1If it were raining, the site would be closed.
Never decide the result clause by copying the if-clause. Decide it by asking: when is THIS half happening?
Step 4

Hindi Concept Note

अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
Mixed conditional = दो अलग समय एक ही वाक्य में।
Past शर्त present नतीजा: अगर मैंने वह नौकरी ले ली होती, तो आज Dubai में होता। If I had taken that job, I would be in Dubai now.
Present शर्त past नतीजा: अगर वह लापरवाह न होता (उसकी आदत), तो file न खोता। If he were not careless, he would not have lost the file.
If it were raining, we would be sitting inside.
Step 5

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong
Right
Why
If I had taken that job, I would have been rich now.
If I had taken that job, I would be rich now.
‘Now’ pins the result to the present would be, not would have been.
If he was working late, he would not be answering. (unreal)
If he were working late, he would not be answering.
Unreal ‘be’ = were, even in continuous forms.
If she knew German, she would apply for that post last year.
If she knew German, she would have applied for that post last year.
‘Last year’ pins the result to the past would have applied.
If they had been watch the site, the theft would not have happened.
If they had been watching the site, the theft would not have happened.
Continuous needs its -ing: had been watching.
If I would have saved earlier, I would own a flat now.
If I had saved earlier, I would own a flat now.
Even in mixed conditionals, would never enters the if-clause.
If it were raining, we would sat inside.
If it were raining, we would be sitting inside.
Ongoing unreal result would be + -ing, not would + V2.
Step 6

Signal Words

Mixing clues:
Present-result words: now, today, still, at the moment would + V1 / would be + -ing
Past-result words: yesterday, that day, last year, in 2020 would have + V3
Permanent traits (honest, careless, stubborn, remote) in the condition present unreal (were/past)
Ongoing action were + -ing (now) or had been + -ing (past)
