Module 3 · Modal Verbs
Can & Could
Step 1
Quick Look
CAN is the busiest modal in English — ability, permission, requests, possibility, even deduction. COULD is its past and its polite twin. This chapter also covers BE ABLE TO, the substitute that works in tenses where can cannot go, and the one distinction that separates advanced speakers: could vs. was able to for past achievements.
Sentence TypeStructure + Example
Ability
She can close difficult deals. / In college, I could run 10 km.
Permission / request
Can I use your charger? / Could you send the papers? (more polite)
Negative deduction
That can’t be the owner — the owner is in Dubai. (I’m sure it’s not)
The golden rule: COULD = general past ability (I could swim as a child — any time, in general). For ONE specific past achievement, English refuses could and demands WAS ABLE TO or MANAGED TO: ‘The lift was stuck, but we were able to open it’ (NOT could open). In the negative, both work: couldn’t open = wasn’t able to open.
Could or was able to?
Step 2
When to Use It
Use 1
Present ability
Skills and capacities, now.
- Our team can handle both sale and lease agreements.
- She can read blueprints faster than the architect.
- I can’t attend both registries on the same day.
Use 2
General past ability — COULD
What you were able to do in general, in that period.
- Before the knee surgery, he could climb all five floors.
- In the 2000s, you could buy land here for 800 a yard.
Use 3
One specific past success — WAS ABLE TO / MANAGED TO
A single event where you succeeded — could is banned here (except in negatives).
- The file was stuck for months, but we were able to clear it last week.
- He managed to reach the court just before the hearing.
- We couldn’t convince the seller. (negative — could returns)
Use 4
Permission and requests
Can = casual; could = softer, more polite. (Full politeness system in Chapter 9.)
- Can I take a photo of the layout?
- Could you hold the payment till Monday?
- You can use the office printer for personal work — within limits.
Use 5
Possibility and negative deduction
Can = things that sometimes happen; can’t = I’m sure it’s not true.
- Delhi summers can cross 47 degrees. (it happens)
- He can’t be serious about that price. (impossible, surely)
- This can’t be the original document — the stamp is missing.
Use 6
BE ABLE TO — the tense substitute
Can has no future or perfect forms; be able to fills every gap.
- You will be able to see the sample flat from next week. (NOT: will can)
- I haven’t been able to reach him since Tuesday.
- She wants to be able to work from home.
Be able to fills the gaps
Step 3
Hindi Concept Note
अHindi Concept Noteहिंदी में समझिए
CAN/COULD = ‘सकना’। वह आ सकती है She can come. वह आ सकती थी She could come.
लेकिन एक छुपा rule है जो Hindi से पकड़ में नहीं आता: past की एक ख़ास कामयाबी के लिए could नहीं — was able to / managed to लगता है।
ताला जाम था, पर हम खोल पाए।
The lock was jammed, but we were able to open it. (could open ग़लत!)
‘नहीं कर पाए’ में could वापस आ जाता है: हम उसे मना नहीं पाए।
We couldn’t convince him.
और future में can नहीं चलता — ‘कर पाओगे’ के लिए will be able to: तुम अगले हफ़्ते देख पाओगे। You will be able to see it next week. (will can कुछ नहीं होता!)
Step 4
Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make
Wrong
Right
Why
The gate was locked, but we could open it.
The gate was locked, but we were able to open it.
One specific past success was able to / managed to. Could is only for general past ability.
You will can visit the site next month.
You will be able to visit the site next month.
Two modals can never sit together. Future ability = will be able to.
I could to finish the report yesterday.
I was able to finish the report yesterday. / I managed to finish...
Two errors: no ‘to’ after could, and a specific achievement rejects could anyway.
He cans speak Haryanvi fluently.
He can speak Haryanvi fluently.
Frozen Rule 2 — no -s, ever.
It can be raining in Mussoorie right now. (guess)
It could / might be raining in Mussoorie right now.
A guess about right now takes could/might, not can. Can = general possibility only.
I don’t can come today.
I can’t (cannot) come today.
No do-support — the negative sits on the modal itself.
Step 5
Signal Words
Can/could signals and traps:
General skill (any time) can (now) / could (past)
One past event + success was able to / managed to
One past event + failure couldn’t / wasn’t able to (both fine)
Future or perfect ability be able to (will be able to, has been able to)
‘Surely not!’ can’t be (negative deduction)
